The state of Georgia conjures up images of warm Southern nights, mint juleps on the porch of an antebellum mansion, soul food and traditional Southern hospitality. From the state capital of Atlanta, with its famous Atlanta History Center and the unique Stone Mountain Park, to Georgia's Historic South that includes the cities of Macon with the Ocmulgee National Monument and the Museum of History in Augusta - the Peach State offers a myriad of opportunities to visitors. While here be sure to take a trip to Savannah in the coastal area and visit the little known but very beautiful Golden Islands - a true semi-tropical paradise. Many of the islands are accessed by ferry from Brunswick. In the Georgia mountains don't miss the Oak Hill and the Martha Berry Museum in Rome. Georgia also has great sports with the Atlanta Braves, and Atlanta Falcons and the University of Georgia.

Mountains

 

The Ty Cobb Museum - The museum fosters education and understanding of baseball and Ty Cobb by providing art and memorabilia, film, video, books and historical archives. The museum also houses the Franklin County Sports Hall of Fame.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway - Blue Ridge Scenic Railway passengers arriving in McCaysville, Georgia, and Copperhill, Tennessee, can look forward to visiting two states during their one hour layover. Shopping and dining opportunities await them. The McCaysville City Park at the edge of the Toccoa River is a great place for the kids to play and feed the ducks.

Gold City Corral & Carriage Service - Enjoy horseback riding, a dinner wagon ride complete with entertainment, or carriage service.

Kangaroo Conservation Center - Kangaroo Conservation Center has the largest collection of kangaroos outside of Australia. Your educational experience will be conducted by trained professionals dedicated to wildlife preservation and environmental concerns. Learn to throw a boomerang, see the new blue-winged kokaburra aviary, visit the breeding center and get a tour of the inner workings of a kangaroo farm.

Cool River Tubing Co. - Scenic 1 hour or 2 and a half hour floats down the Chattahoochee River. The facility also offers waterslides.

Thunder Road USA -Georgia’s Official Racing Hall o - Thunder Road USA is an incredible state of the art motorsports attraction.

Rose Lawn Museum - This beautifully restored Victorian mansion was once the home of nationally renowned evangelist Samuel Porter Jones. The home was developed into a museum to house the writings and memorabilia of Sam Jones and Rebecca Latimer Felton, another Bartow Countian distinguished for her role in history as the first woman to serve in the U.S. Senate.

 

BabyLand General Hospital - Birthplace of the original Cabbage Patch Kids, Housed in the former Neal Clinic (circa 1900 )BabyLand General Hospital welcomes over a quarter of a million visitors each year. Some babies born in the late 70’s and early 80’s are on display in the father’s waiting room. Lunch in the cafeteria is always a treat for the kids.

Gold'n Gem Grubbin - Come pan your own gold and gemstones, right where the old timers fought off the Cherokee Indians in the early 1800's. Come and enjoy the fascinating history of our country's first major GOLD RUSH.

Funky Chicken Art Project - The Funky Chicken Art Project started off being a dilapidated chicken house out in the middle of nowhere. In January, 1995, transformation began to turn it into an art gallery and an outdoor sculpture garden for whimsical, contemporary, and quality works of art.

Weinman Mineral Museum - The mission of the museum is to educate and inspire a diverse audience of students, enthusiasts and visitors about geology with an emphasis on Georgia, by providing unique experiences through exhibits, programs, special events, and outreach in an engaging and fun environment.

The APEX Museum - Visit the Yates and Milton Drug Store, one of Atlanta's first Black owned businesses. Hear the stories of early African American pioneers in Atlanta. Learn about the powerful Black Families that helped to make Atlanta great. See things from an era gone, and items that have transcended through time.

CNN Studio Tour - The tour offers a dramatic look at the history of the CNN News Group Networks, their coverage of the events that shape our world and state-of-the art studios responsible for bringing the news to over one billion people around the globe.

 

Piedmont Park - Piedmont Park is the oldest park in the Atlanta metro region. Piedmont Park's grounds were part of the Battle at Peachtree Creek during the Civil War, at the time of General Sherman’s attack on Atlanta.

Zoo Atlanta - Zoo Atlanta is a private nonprofit wildlife park and zoological trust empowered to exhibit, interpret, study, and care for wildlife in superior environments.

Six Flags White Water - White Water is divided into four fun sections, Wildwater Lagoon, Slippery Ridge, Pine Valley and Flash Flood Canyon. World class water rides and attractions.

Chattahoochee Nature Center - Chattahoochee Nature Center is a pristine refuge located along the Chattahoochee River. The center is a place where hawks swoop, turtles sunbathe on submerged logs, and cattails sway along the quiet riverbank. Here, nature sets the pace for your learning expedition.

Autrey Mill Nature Preserve - Visit one of North Fulton County's treasures! Located on 46 acres of ravine forest and historic past, this nature preserve's mile and one-half of walking trails wind past a scenic creek with rocky shoals, spring seeps, picturesque cliffs, mature trees, wildflowers, native plants, plenty of animal life, old farmstead buildings and related exhibit pieces from the late 1800's.

Historic South

Georgia Music Hall of Fame - 43,000 square foot museum features an extravaganza of music memorabilia of over 450 Georgia artists, videos, interactive exhibits and hospitality with a Georgia accent.

Dauset Trails Nature Center - There are 1100 acres of scenic woods, fields, creeks and lakes. You can see live animals on exhibit and in the wild, hike several miles of trails, enjoy wildflower landscapes, picnic and more.

Starcadia - A six acre entertainment park for the entire family. Batting cages, bumper boats, three go-cart tracks, 18-hole miniature golf course, rock climbing wall, trampoline-bungee jump, kiddie swing and pavilion area for picnics are the outside attractions. The inside attractions are arcade games, redemption center, snack bar, a ""soft play area"" for our younger guests and party rooms.

Georgia Museum of Art - American painting is the focus of the Georgia Museum of Art's collection. The collection is especially strong in early 20th-century paintings with important works by, among others, Impressionists, Ashcan School artists and early Modernists.

Museum of Aviation - Displaying 93 aircraft and hundreds of exhibits on a beautiful 43 acre site, the museum has grown into a significant exhibit, education and cultural center drawing more than 630,000 visitors a year.

Tubman Museum - The mission of the Tubman Museum is to educate people about African American art, history & culture.

Massee Lane Gardens - One of the world's finest collections of camellias fills a nine-acre area at Massee Lane. The Abendroth Japanese Garden, the Scheibert Rose Garden, and beautiful plantings of daffodils, daylilies, chrysanthemums, azaleas, flowering trees, annuals and perennials add to the year-round beauty.

National Science Center's Fort Discovery - Fort Discovery, The National Science Center's incredible, interactive environment on Augusta's scenic Riverwalk, invites you to grasp, to learn, and to experience the technologies involved with communications, electronics, automation, and computers. Immerse yourself in the wonders of science through live demonstrations, virtual realities, and hands-on exhibits.

Durhamtown Plantation Sportsman's Resort - Enjoy over 7,000 acres of wilderness and wildlife. Hunting, fishing, golfing, swimming, and a variety of other outdoor activities.  The facility also offers over 50 miles of trails for your horses and atvs to ride on.

Museum of Arts and Sciences - The Museum features three floors of interactive exhibits exploring art, science and humanities. Its adjacent Back Yard contains forest, aquatic and desert habitats for the Museum's live collections. The Mark Smith Planetarium presents five new shows annually as well as a program on the current night sky which is updated weekly.

Southern Rivers

Wild Adventures - Attractions include wild and exotic animals, amusement rides, and a variety of educational shows and concerts. The park's attractions are focused on the family and feature activities that are fun for both old and young alike.

Swamp Gravy - Folk life play. Each performance is an original, crowd-pleasing blend of comedy, drama, and music featuring a cast of more than 100 volunteers who transform southern life into unforgettable theater.

Thronateeska Heritage Center - Located in historic downtown Albany, the Foundation is composed of three major parts referred to as Thronateeska Heritage Center, the Museum of History, The Wetherbee Planetarium and the Discovery Center.

Chehaw Wild Animal Park - Chehaw Wild Animal Park features natural habitat exhibits with native and exotic animals. Visitors can stroll scenic boardwalks through the cypress swamps. Kids will love the Petting Zoo close by. Then enjoy special programs at the Amphitheater and Discovery Center and tour the Reptile and Small Animal House.

Coca-Cola Space Science Center - The Center includes: Omnisphere Planetarium Theatre - Much more than a Planetarium. Challenger Learning Center - simulated Missions to the Moon and beyond. Mead Observatory - real stars, nebula and galaxies for your own eyes to see. Exhibit areas - hands on Exhibits - to amuse and inform.

Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learning Center - Oxbow Meadows is a nature discovery center located on 1,600 acres of hardwood wetland habitat. The center is a hands-on interpretive facility that focuses on the natural & cultural history of the region. Live & mounted animals are on display, including turtles, snakes, birds, frogs, spiders, fish & an alligator.

Westville - Westville is a living history museum which depicts an 1850 west Georgia village. Westville has over thirty authentically furnished pre-Civil War buildings. Watch the woodworker fashion a stool from a tree. Watch the sparks fly from the blacksmith's anvil and wet clay rise to a pitcher in the potter's hands as he turns his wheel.

Butts Mill Farm - Butts Mill Farm offers wading and cane-pole fishing, feeding and petting the animals in the petting zoo, pony rides, train rides, hayrides, carriage rides aboard one of four antique carriages, horseback riding, tubing, horseshoes, volleyball, and the Wild West playground with in-ground trampoline.

Pebble Hill Plantation - Established in the l820's as a working plantation, Pebble Hill was purchased by the Hanna family in l896 and became their winter home. The Main House is beautifully furnished with antiques, sporting art, and Audubon prints. On the grounds one may stroll through the large stable complex and visit the carriage house and garage where antique vehicles are displayed.

Wild Animal Safari - One of the area's most popular attractions, the 500-acre Pine Mountain Wild Animal Safari, offers a unique, hands-on safari experience. Visitors can see, touch and feed hundreds of exotic animals from every continent - a true worldwide safari.

Callaway Gardens - Callaway Gardens is a 14,000 acre, year-round world-class horticultural display garden and resort. The Gardens include fishing, golf, biking, tennis, swimming and walking as well as attractions such as the Virginia Hand Callaway Discovery Center, Birds of Prey program, Day Butterfly Center, Sibley Horticultural Center, Mr. Cason's Vegetable Garden, Walking Trails, Scenic Drive and more.

St. Mary's Submarine Museum - Located in historic downtown St Mary's, GA, the museum is a great place to learn about the ""Silent Service"". A wide variety of Submarine artifacts, memorabilia and information are available for viewing, and you can checkout the beautiful St Mary's waterfront thru a real periscope.

King-Tisdell Cottage - The King-Tisdell Cottage is an African-American heritage museum named for its African-American owners, Eugene and Sarah King, and Sarah King and Robert Tisdell. The museum presents the African-American historical and cultural experience to the public through the use of such methods as history and art exhibits, films, lectures, oral history, and publications.

Savannah History Museum - Savannah's only Museum dedicated to the history of the whole coastal community and is located in the passenger station of the Central Railroad. It houses a 20,000 square foot exhibit area with a variety of exhibits which reflect Savannah's history from her founding in 1733 to the present.

River Street Riverboat - See a view of Savannah that you will never forget. Take a cruise on the River Queen or the Georgia Queen.

National Parks

Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area

The Recreation Area lies within four counties, north and northeast of downtown Atlanta, Georgia. It consists of 16 land units along a 48-mile stretch of the Chattahoochee River. In addition to providing recreational activities such as fishing, hiking, picnicking, and boating, the park contains a wide variety of natural habitats, flora and fauna, nineteenth century historic sites, and Native American archeological sites. click here for more information

 

Cumberland Island National Seashore

Cumberland Island is 17.5 miles long and totals 36,415 acres of which 16,850 are marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks. It is well known for its sea turtles, wild turkeys, wild horses, armadillos, abundant shore birds, dune fields, maritime forests, salt marshes, and historic structures. Appalachian National Scenic Trail - The Appalachian National Scenic Trail is a 2,167-mile (3,488 km) footpath along the ridge crests and across the major valleys of the Appalachian Mountains from Katahdin in Maine to Springer Mountain in north Georgia. The trail traverses Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland, West Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee, North Carolina and Georgia.

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park - Between 1890 and 1899 the Congress of the United States authorized the establishment of the first four national military parks: Chickamauga and Chattanooga, Shiloh, Gettysburg, and Vicksburg. The first and largest of these, and the one upon which the establishment and development of most other national military and historical parks was based, was Chickamauga and Chattanooga.

Trail Of Tears National Historic Trail - In 1838, the United States government forcibly removed more than 16,000 Cherokee Indian people from their homelands in Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, and Georgia, and sent them to Indian Territory (today known as Oklahoma). The Trail of Tears National Historic Trail commemorates the removal of the Cherokee and the paths that 17 Cherokee detachments followed westward. Today the trail encompasses about 2,200 miles of land and water routes, and traverses portions of nine states.

Cumberland Island National Seashore - Cumberland Island is 17.5 miles long and totals 36,415 acres of which 16,850 are marsh, mud flats, and tidal creeks. It is well known for its sea turtles, abundant shore birds, dune fields, maritime forest, salt marshes, and historic structures.

Fort Federica National Monument - Established in 1736, the town of Frederica was the southernmost post of the British colonies in North America. It protected the rest of Georgia and South Carolina from the Spanish in Florida. The park is known for it's exceptional beauty. Stately oaks, exceptionally large grape vines, and Spanish moss lend an air of antiquity unequaled on the coast.

Fort Pulaski National Monument - The defining events of Fort Pulaski occurred during the American Civil War. In April of 1862, Union troops directed rifled cannon fire at the fort breaching the southeast angle. The quick success of this experimental cannon surprised military strategists. The accuracy and range of the rifled cannon rendered brick fortifications obsolete. Immediately after capturing the fort, Union Major General David Hunter, an ardent abolitionist, ordered the release of area slaves. Many were recruited into the Union army comprising the First South Carolina Colored Regiment.

Andersonville National Historic Site - Andersonville, or Camp Sumter as it was officially known, was one of the largest of many Confederate military prisons established during the Civil War. It was built early in 1864 after Confederate officials decided to move the large number of Federal prisoners kept in and around Richmond, Virginia, to a place of greater security and a more abundant food supply.  The site is also home to the National P.O.W. Museum.

Jimmy Carter National Historic Site - Few U.S. Presidents have had such close ties with where they were born and raised. The rural southern culture of Plains, Georgia, that revolves around farming, church and school, had a large influence in molding the character and in shaping the political policies of the 39th President of the United States. The site includes President Carter’s residence, boyhood farm, school, and the railroad depot, which served as his campaign headquarters during the 1976 election.

Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park - Kennesaw Mountain Battlefield is a 2,884 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign.

Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site - Martin Luther King, Jr., National Historic Site includes a number of facilities that are operated in partnership with the National Park Service, Ebenezer Baptist Church and The King Center. Within these facilities the visitor can learn about Dr. King's life and and his influence on others.

Ocmulgee National Monument - Ocmulgee is a memorial to the antiquity of man in this corner of the North American continent. The National Monument preserves a continuous record of human life in the Southeast from the earliest times to the present. From Ice-Age hunters to the Muscogee (Creek) people of historic times, there is evidence here of 12,000 years of human habitation.
